G-20... Anarchist March

An unauthorized protest march against capitalism began in Lawrenceville and traveled to Bloomsfield to Oakland. Quite an experience.

G-20... Student March

A student-led protest marched their demands, free and accessible education for all, from Carnegie Mellon University to Pitt campus in Oakland.

G-20... Pagan Cluster Protest

Pagan Cluster, an earth-friendly activist group, are repeatedly asked to leave by the Pittsburgh police after frequent protest stops throughout downtown Pittsburgh. After each shuffle, the leader would lay down a triangular-cut sheet and place large lumps of coal on top, while apologizing to the coal for wasting it all on fuel.

Members of the ACT-Up anti AIDS demonstration walk through the streets of downtown Pittsburgh and below the David L. Lawrence Convention Center carrying signs and a mock casket.

David's View

As I was leaving the AFL-CIO convention that was held at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in downtown Pittsburgh, one of the bloggers stopped me and recommended that I take the time to check out the roof. I didn't want to at first--the thought of climbing a set of stairs with my gear on one shoulder and my laptop on the other was the furthest thing from appealing--but he swayed me with his clincher: "I figured, as a photographer, you would appreciate it more than anyone." He was right. It was beautiful... like standing at the bottom of a modern, industrialized Grand Canyon.

Melissa and Jeff's Wedding

Their beautiful, rustic wedding was held at Armstrong Farms, my favorite wedding venue to date. And, again, shot with the accomplished Steven Dietz. Enoy the images!

The A-Ha! Moment

I wasn't surprised that this image never got published--the photo doesn't tell the story. What are these kids doing with cows? Why do they have an audience? Is it some kind of cow talent show? Well, to be honest, I really don't know either--I arrived mid-production. I think that not knowing the context makes this image more intriguing and comical. It's the "A-Ha!" moment, a true manifestation of a lightbulb going off, that I didn't know that I had captured until I was going through my edit. And the eyes, which provide the majority of nonverbal communication, is covered by a cow's ear. It's as if he discovered the secret of life... and you can't see his eyes because his cow is in the way. So random.

Band Night

After participating in band night at the Indiana County Fair every year in high school, it was nice to finally be the photographer who bounced around shooting pictures. Watching the kids stand mixed together from 12 different school districts brought back memories of mass band (at the end of band night, all of the bands come together to play two songs) and being instructed to "play along", meaning, go through the motions of playing the notes with our instruments to our mouths but refrain from actually breathing into the instrument. We were so terrible that our drum major concluded that we would do so much damage to the performance that the only benefit our band could provide would be audible withdrawal. Yes--within seconds--our little band would have ruined the hours and hours of practice that the other schools had invested in. Of course, that didn't stop me or the other clarinets from attempting to freestyle, causing hysterics, and being downright obnoxious. We didn't even have sheet music for the second song...

His Workshop

I walked into a possibly (?) abandoned woodworking studio in the basement of the Rayne Township Consolidated School. Dust covered everything--so surreal.
